We bring together the local community and organisations to work collectively towards a future free from single-use plastics and to promote a circular, zero-waste economy.
We are environmental organisations from Ibiza and Formentera working together to transition towards a circular economy, in alignment with the goals of the European Green Deal.
The alliance, originally known as Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera, took the lead in tackling plastic pollution across our islands. The alliance is primarily funded by IbizaPreservation and its partners.
The dedication of all member organisations has propelled the alliance to evolve, now embracing a zero-waste approach and comprehensive waste management practices that promote a circular economy.
In the past decade, the world has produced more plastic than in the entire previous century. This exponential increase has placed an immense burden on the environment and public health.
In Ibiza, the growth of the tourism sector has significantly increased waste production, putting additional strain on the Ca Na Putxa landfill site, which is projected to reach full capacity by 2030. This is one of the island's most urgent environmental challenges.
These concepts are essential for reducing
waste and maximising resource use.
The circular economy is a model that minimises waste and keeps the value of resources and products in use for as long as possible, contrasting with the linear economy of "produce, use, and throw away". According to European directives, the waste management hierarchy is: reduce, reuse, recycle, incinerate, landfill.
Zero waste focuses on preventing waste creation from the start and, if waste is generated, finding ways to reuse or recycle it rather than sending it to landfill. This approach is especially important in Ibiza and Formentera, where the landfill is nearing maximum capacity.
At Plastic Free: Zero Waste Alliance Ibiza and Formentera, we are working to make our islands free from single-use plastics and to lead the way in promoting a circular economy through the following actions:
We share information and press companies and public institutions to comply with relevant regulations, such as the Balearic Waste Law.
We advocate for a coherent waste management approach.
We create campaigns to prevent waste generation and eliminate single-use plastics.
We organise clean-ups in natural areas.

An environmental label created in 2019 to drive plastic reduction in the hospitality sector. Thanks to funding from Beyond Plastic Med, IbizaPreservation and Save the Med were able to develop and launch a new Balearic-wide version in 2021.
This environmental certification, using simple tools and a guide to practical alternatives, helps businesses comply with the Balearic Waste Law and European Ddirectives.
